Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) – Essential vitamin for energy production and cellular health
Riboflavin, commonly known as vitamin B2, is a water-soluble vitamin that the human body cannot store in significant amounts. In dietary supplements, this vitamin is utilized to prevent deficiencies, support energy metabolism, and contribute to the maintenance of healthy skin, mucous membranes, nails, and vision, as part of a balanced lifestyle. Riboflavin is naturally abundant in dairy products (such as milk and cheese), meat, vegetables, and grain products.
Characteristics, Origin, and Composition
Because riboflavin is water-soluble, any excess is rapidly excreted by the kidneys; this is why supplementation often gives urine a characteristic bright yellow, sometimes almost fluorescent color (riboflavin belongs to the ‘flavins’, a group of yellow pigments). Inside our cells, riboflavin is enzymatically converted into its active coenzyme forms, such as riboflavin-5′-phosphate (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). These coenzymes are absolutely critical for cellular respiration: they are indispensable for releasing energy (ATP) from the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins we consume. Furthermore, riboflavin functions as an important antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative stress, and it is involved in red blood cell production and normal growth.
Use in Dietary Supplements
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is commonly used in supplements:
-
In B-complex vitamins or multivitamins to support daily energy yielding metabolism and help reduce tiredness and fatigue.
-
To support the health of the skin, hair, and mucous membranes; a B2 deficiency often first manifests as inflammation or cracking at the corners of the mouth and lips.
-
To support normal vision, where its antioxidant properties help protect eye tissue.
-
Sometimes in high-dose standalone products for specific neurological purposes, such as to aid in the prevention of migraines (under the guidance of a physician).
Everyday Use and Well-Being
For adults, the recommended adequate intake of riboflavin typically hovers around 1.5 milligrams per day. Riboflavin supplements are exceptionally safe; due to its water-soluble nature, any excess is simply excreted in the urine. Dietary supplements do not replace proper nutrition or medical treatment. Individuals with highly restricted diets or certain malabsorption issues may benefit from supplementation.
