You May be a Pure May

The deep highways of energy

In addition to the twelve main meridians, the TCM recognizes eightExtraordinary Meridians(Qi Jing Ba Mai). These are considered deep reservoirs and regulatory channels. The two best known are the Du Mai and Ren Mai.

From May – Governor

  • Runs along the spine, via the vertebrae to the head.

  • Connects all Yang meridians.

  • Function: Supports posture, willpower, the spine, brain and central nervous system.

A strong Du Mai provides back strength – both literally and figuratively. It’s often used for back pain, mental exhaustion, or difficulty standing upright in life.

Ren Mai – The Receiver

  • Runs across the front of the body, from perineum to chin.

  • Connects all Yin meridians.

  • Function: Regulates Yin, fertility, uterine and pelvic energy.

Ren Mai is crucial in gynecological TCM, but also plays a role in emotional security and “taking up space” at the front of the body.

Cooperation

Du and Ren are often treated together (for example, through opening points) to balance front and back, Yin and Yang, and internal and external posture. You could think of them as the two pillars against which the rest of the meridians rest.
