Xiao Yao San(“Free and Easy Wanderer”) is probably the best-selling formula in the West, famous for its effectiveness against stress and mood swings. But often the “upgrade”,Jia Wei Xiao Yao San, the better choice. What’s the difference?
Xiao Yao San: Pure Qi Stagnation
The basic formula is intended for Liver Qi Stagnation with Blood Deficiency.
Symptoms:Irritability, bloating, sighing, fatigue, and irregular menstrual cycles. There is tension, but (as yet) no clear heat. The person feels primarily blocked and tired.
Jia Wei Xiao Yao San: Stagnation with Heat
“Jia Wei” means “added flavors.” Two herbs are added to the base:Mu Dan Pi(Peony bark) andZhi Zi(Gardenia). Both are cold by nature.
Why?When Qi stagnates for extended periods (such as with chronic stress), friction occurs. Friction creates heat.
Symptoms:The person is not only tense but also feels hot. They may have a flushed face when emotional, sweat at night, a short fuse (exploding instead of sighing), a dry mouth, and possibly heavier periods due to the heat in the blood.
