Why TCM works on deep cold especially in warm seasons
A classic principle in TCM is “treating winter illnesses in summer.” This refers to complaints that primarily arise during the cold season, such as stiff joints, bronchial sensitivity, or deep coldness in the body.
The logic behind the season
In summer, Yang (heat, activity) is naturally stronger in nature and within the body. The body’s gates are more open, blood circulation is more active, and skin pores open more easily.
This makes summer the ideal period to:
To tackle deep-seated cold in joints or spine.
Strengthen the lungs and resistance before the cold season.
To allow tonic and warming therapies to work better (e.g. moxa, herbal plasters).
Preventive strategy
Instead of responding to winter ailments every year, traditional Chinese medicine often schedules a summer cure to harmonize the underlying pattern. You could say: you light the stove and insulate your house in August, so you’ll be warm in January without having to work overtime.
