In Chinese herbalism, the color yellow (“Huang”) often indicates a specific family of roots known for their bitterness and their ability to control heat and dampness. Three of the most well-known are Huang Lian, Huang Qin, and Huang Bai. Although they appear similar, each has its own specific sphere of action within the body.
Huang Qin (Scutellaria): The Upper Floor
Huang Qin mainly focuses on theTop Warmer(Lungs and Chest).
Function:It helps maintain a clear and cool head and supports the airways when feeling warm or full. It is often used in seasons when pollen or heat can affect breathing.
Huang Lian (Coptis): The Middle Floor
Huang Lian works mainly on the Middle Warmer(Stomach and Heart).
Function:This is the bitterest of the three. It helps settle the stomach (for example, after a heavy meal or when feeling restless) and soothe an uneasy feeling in the chest. It is known for its ability to clear “fire” that disturbs tranquility.
Huang Bai (Phellodendron): The Lower Floor
Huang Bai descends to the Bottom Warmer(Kidneys, Bladder and Intestines).
Function:It promotes a feeling of comfort in the lower abdomen and urinary tract. It is also often used to protect the “Yin” (fluids) from dehydration due to heat.
Conclusion:Together or separately, these “Yellow Brothers” ensure a cool and balanced body, from head to toe.
