“Sheng” means raw or fresh. In this form, the root is cold and bittersweet.
Function:It is known for its cooling properties. It helps reduce heat in the body and supports fluid balance in cases of dehydration or feeling hot.
Application:Often used in formulas for people who get hot quickly, are thirsty or experience restlessness due to heat.
Shu Di Huang (Edited)
“Shu” means cooked or processed. The root is steamed in wine and dried in the sun, sometimes as many as nine times. This process blackens the root, softens it, and makes it rich in flavor. Its cold nature disappears, replaced by warmth.
Function:It is now a “tonic.” It deeply nourishes the body’s substance (yin and blood).
Application:This is the ultimate herb for recovery, vitality, and supporting reserves. It is used for fatigue, pallor, and to support the lower back and knees.
