History

Weinsch Six Gentlemen Detox Extra Strong is a traditional Chinese herbal formula derived from the classical Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), a foundational Spleen Qi tonic recorded in the Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang during the Song Dynasty. To enhance its effectiveness in treating Dampness and phlegm accumulation, two additional herbs, Chen Pi (aged tangerine peel) and Ban Xia (Pinellia), were added, forming Liu Jun Zi Tang (“Six Gentlemen Decoction”). This formula became widely used for digestive weakness accompanied by phlegm or Damp symptoms, such as poor appetite, bloating, fatigue, and cough with mucus.

Functional Dyspepsia and Gastrointestinal Disorders
Randomized Controlled Trials and Meta-Analyses:
A meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials (1,149 participants) found that Liu Jun Zi Tang (LJZT) and its variant Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang (XSLJZT) were more effective than prokinetic drugs (such as domperidone, cisapride, and mosapride) in improving symptoms of functional dyspepsia. The odds ratio for symptom improvement was 1.96 (95% CI: 1.15–3.36) for LJZT and 2.63 (95% CI: 1.72–4.03) for XSLJZT. No significant adverse events were reported in any trial.
Studies confirm that LJZT enhances gastric emptying and improves chronic dyspepsia symptoms compared to placebo.

Mechanisms
LJZT may increase plasma ghrelin levels, enhancing appetite and gastric motility, though this effect did not reach statistical significance in all studies.
The formula contains herbs such as ginseng, atractylodes, poria, licorice, pinellia, tangerine peel, ginger, and jujube, which synergistically support digestive function and regulate gastrointestinal motility.

Chemotherapy-Induced Side Effects and Neuroprotection
Adjunct in Cancer Therapy

LJZT is used as a complementary therapy to reduce side effects of chemotherapy, such as dyspepsia and neuropathic pain. Preclinical studies show that LJZT attenuates cisplatin-induced neuropathic pain and neurotoxicity in animal models by reducing oxidative stress, preserving mitochondrial function, and regulating PGC-1α expression.

Additional Clinical Applications
Gastroesophageal Reflux and IBS
Clinical research indicates that Liu Jun Zi Tang can enhance gastric emptying and promote gastric adaptive relaxation, potentially benefiting patients with gastroesophageal reflux and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Appetite and Nausea
Biomedical studies highlight LJZT’s role in improving appetite, reducing nausea, and supporting overall gastrointestinal health by increasing ghrelin secretion and gastric motility.
