Weinsch Inner Calm Balance Tonic Extra Strong is based on Gan Mai Da Zao Tang. It is a classical formula first recorded in the Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) by Zhang Zhong-jing during the Han dynasty. It was originally created to calm the Shen, ease emotional restlessness, and nourish the Heart and Spleen. The formula combines licorice root (Gan Cao), wheat (Xiao Mai), and jujube fruit (Da Zao) in a simple yet effective blend that supports harmony of body and mind. Traditionally used in TCM to encourage relaxation, soothe fluctuations of mood, and promote balance during times of tension or overwork.

Depression (Major, Post-Stroke, Postpartum, and Elderly)
Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis (2014):
A meta-analysis included 13 RCTs of Gan Mai Da Zao Tang (GMDZ) for various types of depression.
Results: GMDZ showed comparable response rates to conventional antidepressants for major depression, and a possibly favorable effect for post-stroke depression (RR: 1.17).
Limitations: Overall study quality was low, with high risk of bias; findings were inconclusive for superiority over standard drugs.
2
Stress, Anxiety, and Sleep Disorders
Animal and Human Studies:
Systematic reviews of animal models (rat and mouse) found that GMDZ improved behavioral indicators for acute psychological stress, PTSD, depression, and anxiety, likely via upregulation of serotonin transporter (5-HTT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus.
Human studies showed reduced subjective scores of stress and anxiety in both placebo-controlled and comparative designs, with improvement in quality of life.
