History

Weinsch Head Balance Extra Strong is based on the classical formula Tong Qiao Huo Xue Tang, created by the famous Qing Dynasty physician Wang Qing-Ren and published in his medical text Yi Lin Gai Cuo (“Correcting the Errors in the Forest of Medicine”). The formula was developed to invigorate blood circulation in the head and sensory orifices, especially in cases of headaches, tinnitus, facial numbness, and post-stroke symptoms caused by blood stasis. Wang Qing-Ren emphasized the importance of cerebral blood flow and was one of the earliest to clinically focus on vascular function in traditional Chinese medicine. Today, it is widely used for circulatory head symptoms, neurological recovery, and chronic sinus or facial issues linked to poor blood flow.

Ischemic Stroke
Meta-Analysis of RCTs:
A 2022 systematic review included 17 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 1,489 patients, finding that TQHXD significantly improved clinical effective rate, neurological deficit scores, activities of daily living (ADL), and hemorheology (hematocrit, fibrinogen, plasma viscosity, platelet adherence) in acute ischemic stroke.
Conclusion: TQHXD is effective for acute ischemic stroke, but higher-quality, large-sample trials are needed for definitive evidence.

Combination with Western Medicine:
A 2020 meta-analysis of 40 RCTs (3,260 patients) found that TQHXD combined with standard Western medicine significantly reduced NIHSS (neurological deficit) scores, serum hs-CRP, plasma viscosity, fibrinogen, cholesterol, and triglycerides, and improved ADL (Barthel index) and overall treatment efficiency.
Safety: No significant increase in adverse events was observed.

Vascular Dementia (VD)
Mechanistic and Animal Studies:
TQHXD improved learning and memory in rat models of VD, enhanced hippocampal neuron morphology, increased dendritic length and spine density, and promoted synaptic remodeling.
The neuroprotective effect is likely mediated through activation of the cAMP/PKA/CREB signaling pathway, reducing apoptosis and oxidative stress.
Clinical Evidence:Clinical studies report that TQHXD improves cognitive scores (MoCA), daily living ability (ADL), and reduces neuroinflammation in VD patients.

Blood-Brain Barrier and Neuroprotection
Preclinical Study:
TQHXD protected hippocampal neurons and maintained blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity in cerebral ischemia models by upregulating tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin, claudin-5) and downregulating aquaporin-4 and MMP-9.
Active compounds such as muscone, ligustilide, and hydroxysafflor yellow A were detected in cerebrospinal fluid, supporting their role in BBB protection.

Broader Cerebrovascular and Neurological Indications
Clinical Reviews:
TQHXD is used for a wide range of head and face disorders, including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, vertebrobasilar artery dilation, vascular dementia, and posterior circulation ischemic vertigo.
It is associated with improvements in cognitive function, daily living, and reduction of depression scores in post-stroke depression.
