Reduces acid reflux and sour belching: Helps when there’s a mix of nausea, burping, or a bitter taste from poor stomach function.
Harmonizes conflicting digestion patterns: Useful when loose stools, gas, and heat signs like bad breath appear together.
Calms the stomach and reduces nausea: Supports people with queasiness, vomiting, or uneasy digestion.
Regulates irregular digestion with discomfort: Helps when symptoms are unpredictable—like alternating constipation and diarrhea, or shifting appetite.
Clears clumping and stagnation in the gut: Promotes better movement of food and qi when digestion feels blocked or sluggish.

History

Weinsch Gastro Calm Extra Strong is based on the classical formula Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang, first recorded in the ancient Chinese medical text Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage), written by Zhang Zhongjing over 1,800 years ago during the Han dynasty. The original formula was designed to harmonize the Stomach and Intestines, especially for people with mixed digestive symptoms—like bloating, nausea, and irregular bowel movements. It was used when cold and heat signs appeared together in the digestive system, often due to improper diet, stress, or long-term illness.
Over time, this formula became a cornerstone in treating complex digestive conditions. Today, it is used in both traditional and integrative medicine for chronic indigestion, gastritis, acid reflux, and irritable digestion, especially when the symptoms are confusing or don’t follow a clear pattern.

Information for professionals

Weinsch Gastro Calm Extra Strong is the modern tablet form of the classical formula Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang, first recorded in the Shang Han Lun during the Han dynasty. This formula is designed to harmonize the Stomach and Intestines, disperse clumping, and regulate Qi and moisture. It is primarily used for conditions with a mixture of cold and heat in the middle burner, leading to digestive symptoms that are both excessive and deficient in nature.

Functions & Indications

  • Harmonizes the Stomach and Spleen.
  • Descends rebellious Qi and stops nausea.
  • Clears heat and disperses stagnation.
  • Resolves clumping and improves food movement.
  • Tonifies underlying Spleen deficiency while managing excess symptoms.

Clinical Indications

  • Epigastric fullness or tightness not relieved by eating.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or acid reflux after meals.
  • Bloating, belching, or food stagnation sensations.
  • Mixed symptoms: soft stools or diarrhea alongside heat signs (e.g., bitter taste, bad breath).
  • Gurgling sounds or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
  • Appetite irregularity, poor digestion, or chronic mild gastritis.
  • Useful in Spleen-Stomach disharmony with underlying Qi or fluid imbalance.

Tongue & Pulse

Tongue: Slightly red with a greasy, yellow or white coating.
Pulse: Wiry or slippery, possibly weak in the middle position.

Related Concerns

  • Spleen deficiency with food stagnation and heat.
  • Cold-heat complex in the middle burner.
  • Functional digestive disorders (e.g., irritable bowel with reflux).
  • Post-infectious or stress-related digestive imbalance.
  • Gastritis, acid reflux, or slow digestion with irregular symptoms.

Clinical Applications for Reference Only

Avoid in individuals allergic to Pinellia (Ban Xia), Scutellaria (Huang Qin), or excipients such as corn starch or wheat fillers used in tablet forms.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable for purely cold or purely hot digestive patterns.

Functional Dyspepsia (FD)
Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial:
A multicenter RCT (n=101) assessed modified Ban Xia Xie Xin decoction for patients with functional dyspepsia of “cold and heat in complexity” syndrome. The herbal group showed significant improvements in total and individual dyspepsia symptom scores compared to placebo (P < 0.01), with benefits persisting during a 4-week follow-up. The formula was well tolerated, and no serious adverse events were reported.

Chronic Atrophic Gastritis (CAG)
Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis:
A 2020 meta-analysis of 26 RCTs (n=1985) found Banxia Xiexin decoction (BXD) significantly more effective than Chinese patent medicine plus Western medicine for CAG. BXD improved clinical efficacy, reduced stomach pain and belching, inhibited Helicobacter pylori, and alleviated gastric mucosal atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia. Adverse events were fewer in the BXD group.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Systematic Review:
A 2017 review found that modified Banxia Xiexin decoction (MBXD) may have potential benefits for GERD, especially when combined with standard therapies. Several included studies reported symptom improvement and good tolerability, but larger, higher-quality trials are needed.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC)
Clinical Study:
In patients with advanced HCC, Banxia Xie Xin decoction as a blended granule was associated with a median progression-free survival (PFS) of 6.07 months and median overall survival (OS) of 12.60 months in a real-world clinical setting. The findings suggest possible benefit, especially for patients with limited options, though direct head-to-head trials with standard therapies are still needed.
