History

Weinsch Clear Stomach Extra Strong is based on the classical formula Ping Wei San, first recorded in the Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang during the Song Dynasty. It was designed to treat digestive discomfort caused by internal dampness, a common consequence of poor diet, cold foods, or weak Spleen function. The formula combines aromatic herbs that dry damp, move Qi, and support the Stomach and Spleen. Traditionally used to relieve bloating, nausea, and poor appetite, Ping Wei San remains a foundational remedy in Chinese medicine for regulating digestion and eliminating damp obstruction.

Spleen-Deficiency Diarrhea and Gut Health
Animal Studies:
Ping Wei San (PWS) has been shown to significantly ameliorate spleen-deficiency diarrhea (SDD) in rat models.

Key findings include: Increased body weight and reduced fecal water content in SDD rats. Decreased inflammatory cell infiltration in the colon. Upregulation of aquaporins (AQP3, AQP4, AQP8) and tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Occludin), enhancing the intestinal barrier. Reduced inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and increased antioxidant activity (TAOC, GSH-Px, SOD).
Modulation of gut microbiota: PWS increased beneficial bacteria (Prevotellaceae, Eubacterium_ruminantium_group, Tuzzerella) and decreased potentially harmful ones (Ruminococcus, Frisingicoccus).
Conclusion: PWS exerts therapeutic effects on SDD by protecting the intestinal barrier and restoring microbiota balance.

Gastroprotective Effects
Gastric Ulcer Models:

In animal studies, Ping Wei San reduced gastric ulceration induced by indomethacin. It did not diminish the anti-inflammatory effect of indomethacin, and co-treatment even enhanced certain anti-inflammatory outcomes (e.g., inhibition of carrageenan-induced paw edema). PWS also enhanced the inhibition of PGE2 by indomethacin, suggesting a potential role in protecting the gastric mucosa during NSAID therapy.

Antibacterial Synergy and Drug Resistance
Synergy with Antibiotics:

Ping Wei Pian (Pingwei Pill) has been shown to synergistically enhance the antibacterial activity of colistin against MCR-1-positive, drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Mechanistically, it increases bacterial membrane permeability, allowing colistin to be more effective, and does so without increasing cytotoxicity or inducing drug resistance. In mouse and chick models of Salmonella infection, Ping Wei Pian combined with colistin improved survival, reduced bacterial burden, and alleviated tissue damage. This positions Ping Wei Pian as a promising adjunct to antibiotics in the fight against resistant infections.
