Green-lipped Mussel – New Zealand joint supplement with omega-3s, glucosamine, and chondroitin

Green-lipped mussel, derived from the New Zealand mussel Perna canaliculus, is a dietary supplement mainly used to support joints, mobility, and joint comfort. The extract contains a mix of omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, plus naturally occurring glucosamine and chondroitin, which sets it apart from many single-ingredient joint products.

Characteristics and composition

Green-lipped mussel is notable because it combines several bioactive components in one raw material, including multiple fatty acids and cartilage-related compounds. Its proposed effects are linked mainly to the anti-inflammatory properties of its lipids and possible support for joint-cell structure and function. It is sold as powder, capsules, and oil extracts, with stabilized lipid extracts often emphasized because they better preserve delicate fatty acids.

Use in dietary supplements

Green-lipped mussel is used mostly for osteoarthritis or general joint complaints, and a 2021 systematic review concluded that Perna canaliculus supplements may improve pain and mobility outcomes in osteoarthritis. At the same time, the evidence is not strong enough to treat it as a proven therapy, and another authoritative source states it has not been shown to be effective for rheumatoid arthritis. In practice, it is usually positioned as an adjunct to standard care rather than a replacement for medical treatment.

Everyday use and safety

Green-lipped mussel is generally fairly well tolerated, but stomach upset, nausea, gas, skin rash, and in rare cases more serious reactions have been reported. People with shellfish or mollusk allergy should avoid it because of the risk of severe allergic reactions. Extra caution is also sensible in people with gout, liver issues, or those using other anti-inflammatory or blood-related supplements or medicines.
