Calm Internal Wind
Gou Teng(Uncaria) is a plant with distinctive, hooked spines. In the TCM doctrine of “signature” (where form reveals function), we say that these hooks can “catch” or “grab” things. In this case, they grasp the “Internal Wind.”
What is Internal Wind?
Internal Wind refers to symptoms of uncontrolled movement or rising tension in the body, often caused by heat in the Liver. Think of hand tremors, tics, spasms, or a feeling of dizziness and pressure in the head.
The Operation
Gou Tengis sweet and slightly cooling. It has the specific property of calming the liver and quenching heat. This dissipates “wind” (the vibration or tension).
Application:It’s widely used in formulas to maintain a calm mind, stable blood pressure (within normal ranges), and smooth, spasm-free movement. It helps to calm physical and mental “storms.”
