Making Peace in the Formula
High LiverLicorice root is the most widely used herb in all of Chinese medicine. You’ll find it in almost every formula. Why? Not (only) because of its sweet taste.
The Minister of Peace
Gan Cao is called the “Great Harmonizer”.
Function:An herbal formula often contains ingredients with different temperatures (hot and cold) and directions (rising and falling). Without guidance, these could clash within the body. Gan Cao brings them together. It softens the sharp edges of powerful herbs, slows the effects of fast-acting herbs, and ensures that the formula works together as a whole.
Two Forms
Sheng Gan Cao (Rauw):More cooling, used to reduce heat (inflammation).
Zhi Gan Cao (Edited with honey):More warming and tonifying. Used to strengthen digestion and energy (Qi) and to calm an irregular heartbeat (in TCM terms).
It is the glue that holds the formula together and protects the stomach.
